A family in Lawton, Oklahoma consisting of two married adults and their five children, had been homeless up until February 13th, 2024, when they moved into an unfurnished house. They were anxious to begin a new chapter, but they needed financial assistance furnishing it. A CarePortal request was made on behalf of this family and stated the need clearly, “The requested items will help this family get settled into their new place and make it feel like home.” Included in the list of needs were a dresser, twin mattresses, pots and pans, plates, a kitchen table and chairs, and a loveseat.
A Responder at First Baptist East Church had travelled to Altus, Oklahoma to meet a different need, but while she was there, she happened to find a table and chairs that would be perfect for this newly-homed Lawton family. A CarePortal Responder at Cameron Baptist Church had already provided the three twin mattresses in this request, leaving just a few more items to help this family get settled. Over the next couple of days after picking up the needed table and chairs, First Baptist East Church’s Responder took the initiative to shop for the rest of the items in the CarePortal request. She ended up supplying the family with pots, pans, plates, a loveseat, and even dialogued with the mother about including her favorite style of wall decor. This Responder was dedicated to not just fulfilling these needs, but paying attention to and investing in details that would make this family feel seen and loved. These requested items amounted to almost $1,000 in furniture and home supplies, all of which First Baptist East delivered to the family.
As the family received these items, they were completely overwhelmed with gratitude and joy. The mother was so moved by these acts of kindness, intentionality, and provision from the Lord, that she had their case worker deliver a handwritten letter to First Baptist East Church. It read:
“To whom it may concern:
My family and I have been seeking a more permanent home since November 2023. We travelled to four states between November 2023 to January 2024. We had unimaginable difficulties until we arrived in Lawton, Oklahoma. I would like to extend my family’s sincerest thank-you’s. When times would become difficult, we still remained optimistic. Thank the Lord that we were able to arrive safe and together.
There is no other explanation for our unscathed survival, other than faith. We are thankful for your kindness and compassion concerning our family.
I know your thoughtful gifts will extend my family many comforts. These belongings are more than gifts, they are a reminder of your kindness. This is something that cannot be bought. Thank you. You are our guardian angel. We will forever be grateful.”
111Project thanks the CarePortal Responders at First Baptist East Church and Cameron Baptist Church for the kindness and attention shown in caring for this precious family. Not only were the physical needs provided for their home, but a lasting impact was left on each member of the family, reminding them that they have a God who sees them, knows their needs, and loves blessing His children.
